What Makes Whaleback Special
Whaleback Mountain is located in Enfield, NH near the Vermont border and halfway up the Connecticut River Valley. They were founded in 1955 by ski racing and jumping legend Ernest Dion as Snowcrest, which was later renamed to Whaleback in 1968 by new owners. After the ski area was foreclosed upon in 2013 a group of locals formed the Upper Valley Snow Sports Foundation and purchased the mountain to operate as a non-profit for the benefit of those in their community and beyond. They not only offer very affordable lift tickets everyone as part of their mission, they have achieved sustainability and offer financial aid to children and families to provide recreational opportunities, develop skill, and a lasting love for both snow and their mountain.
The "Whale", as locals call it, offers 700' of vertical, 30 trails, and 85 acres of terrain including many glades and a steep fall line, and the entire mountain can be accessed by their iconic Summit Double. Their hours are as unique as the mountain, operating Tuesday through Thursday from 2PM-7PM, Fridays from Noon-8PM with live music every week, and on weekends from 9AM-4PM. Lights keep the majority of their terrain open after dark, but they'll keep all of the ropes down until the sun sets. This allows them to offer those in their community an opportunity to hit the slopes after work and school. They are conveniently located next to I-89 and almost everyone who drives from the greater Boston Metro area to Vermont will surely recognize the front face of their mountain from driving by it on the highway. There's much more mountain though than meets the eye, and the next time you should at least consider a stop to check them out.
Whaleback isn't just your local bump where families can take the kids skiing and riding without breaking the bank, the mountain has serious steeps, skis big, and there is far more to it than you can see from driving past it on the highway. On one one big powder day last season in March when a power outage hit Magic at noon forcing them to shut down for the day, someone shouted from the crowd "Whaleback is the place to go. They open 2-7PM!", and many did in fact do just that scoring a second chance at first tracks. The Whale not only saved the day, it lived up to it's Ski it to Believe It motto.
I think everybody gets front row parking at Whaleback. I've probably driven by this place hundreds of times on my way to/from VT skiing. This was my first time skiing here and I was thoroughly impressed. The little mountain with the big mountain feel. Glades were a lot of fun and more challenging than anticipated. Some steep trails and the Face is no joke. It looks very unassuming from the lift, but I assure it is not.

Whaleback has such awesome terrain, it really shines on a powder day! A lot of awesome trees and steeps for a mountain of its size. YOOYM is one the best glades I’ve skied in NH. Never had to wait more than two minutes for a lift.

Whaleback offers a quintessential New England skiing and riding experience, and while we might say it is off the beaten path, it is literally just off the highway. While Snowology certainly don't discourage visiting larger resorts, we try to make it a point to help raise awareness of what places like Whaleback have to offer because we know too many are missing out. Their 700' of vertical may seem like a pittance to some until they realize that even Killington has only a handful of lifts with more than 1,000' of vert and much of the best terrain in the Northeast is accessed from fixed grip lifts of similar size. The laid back feeling and the soul of places like Whaleback though is not fostered in corporate boardrooms, it grows out of communities and that can't be replicated from thousands of miles away. It's a different type of experience and one that we think everyone should get to know better.
Whaleback joined the Indy Pass this season giving their passholders 2 days to experience what they have to offer. Their full day adult tickets though are just $40 on weekdays and $50 on weekends, but with your Snowology Club discount you can visit for just half that and then use your savings to stop in the lodge and get yourself some food and beverages. Whaleback is the first non-profit ski area to join the Snowology Club, giving our subscribers options from large resorts, to mid-sized regional conglomerates, to mom and pop operations, and now also community operated ski areas.
