We're still working our buns off at Snowology putting the final touches on The Powculator and tightening up as many loose ends as possible while the navigational interface is being worked on. In the meantime I wanted to take a moment to talk about why our regional focus is a benefit for skiers and riders and also share with everyone the list of ski areas that we will be covering.
Snowology Is the Only Ski Weather Resource Focused on the East
Snowology has our roots in the Northeast of course. Our knowledge of the Northeast provides notable value to our subscribers that doesn't exist elsewhere. You will almost never of course see any other national weather or media resource call out the likes of a Royal Mountain, or the Brattleboro Ski Hill, or even Black Mountain of NH which was saved by the folks at Indy Pass. They'll just call out the Jay Peaks, Killingtons, and Sugarloafs 95 times out of 100 because they are better known and get more clicks. Even Stratton, one of the top 10 busiest resorts in the Northeast, rarely even gets mentions from national resources. This is no different than a big company in Colorado buying up East Coast ski resorts and treating them like second-class citizens because the big money is out in the West. I mean, do you tune into national news to get your local weather forecast? How much time does the Weather Channel spend covering weather for your city outside of their automated local forecasts every 30 minutes?
Snowology was created back in 2018 because of the lack of good skiing and riding resources in the East and even 8 seasons later we're still the only ones providing extensive coverage, and that coverage is now being broadened and more enhanced. This is important not just for skiers and riders, it's important to the entire East Coast ski industry. There's so much more for everyone to experience beyond the very best known resorts around and I've gone out of my way for years to talk about the places worth traveling to across the entire region. Not because smaller ski areas are a charity in need of your visits, but because they are fun to visit and many are hidden gems in their own regard. Small and medium sized ski areas should all want a leading resource that doesn't fail to cover them too. We're in this together to fight the generalizations of broad-based coverage and share our version of the ski industry's true soul. Local dedicated weather coverage is also of course superior.
Who Will Snowology Be Covering?
As far as broadening our coverage beyond the Northeast, while our written coverage will not change from its Northeast focus we realize that among our subscribers are folks from the Mid Atlantic as well as Eastern Canada who might also like some additional coverage for nearby ski areas and also at times people from the Northeast will venture into these parts. The Powculator and automated weather will fully serve all of these additional ski areas on our website.
We will be including every single ski area in the Eastern United States all the way from a ski hill in Maine with 55' of vert and a couple of rope tows to Whiteface and their 3,164' of true vert, and even down to Cloudmont in Alabama where they light up the guns when they can on a golf course hill every so often. North of the border however we will only covering some of the more notable ski areas in Ontario and Quebec at this time but if there is significantly more interest among Ontarians or Quebecois then we may expand this in the future.
All together there are 183 ski areas in total, including 155 in the 9 state Northeast region, 13 in Eastern Canada (Quebec and Ontario), and 16 in the Mid Atlantic. In the Eastern US if a ski area is a business of some sort (including non-profits) and they operate, then we're going to list them on our site. We can't of course fit everyone on our static forecast maps though, in fact we might trim some off when we redesign in order to focus on legibility for mobile devices, but they'll always have forecasts available on our website and soon also through our app.
While many are interested in seeing their local rope tow or very small ski area in the list we do realize that there are quite a few of them and so our website will have a switch to turn off the display of all very small ski areas, being those with no chairlifts or no more than just one double or triple chair (49 in total).
Here's the full list of ski areas that we will soon provide forecasting coverage for:
